ABOUT HISTORT AND INTERNATIONAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT
History and International Studies Department came into existence at the inception of the University in February 2013. The Department started with 3 students and 4 Academic staff comprising one Ph.D. holder as Senior Lecturer who served as the first Acting Head of the Department, one Lecturer I, and two Assistant Lecturers. The Department runs a degree programme of four years duration leading to the award of B.A. History and International Studies. Over the years, there has been a steady increase in both students’ enrolment and staff capacity strength. Initially, the Department was sharing an office with other departments at the Take-off site but by January 2017 it was moved to the permanent site where it has been sharing a block of offices with other departments in the Faculty. Presently, the Department is sharing a block of offices with the Department of European Languages in the Faculty of Arts. The B.A. The history and International Studies Degree programme provides the graduate with a broad background in History and International Studies and is sufficiently adaptable to stimulate innovative students to become Historians and International scholars in both local and International History after graduating.
The Department has currently (2022/2023) secured the approval for Postgraduate Studies (Academic and Professional Masters, and PhD in History and International Studies).
The B.A. The history and International Studies programme is designed to make students understand the attempts of human beings in the past to organize life materially, conceptually, individual, ally, and collectively. The programme provides a distinctive sense of the past, an awareness of differing value systems and societies; and the inculcation of critical yet tolerant personal views on issues. It is also meant to widen students’ horizons and develop their critical thinking abilities for sound perception of events as well as value judgments. The programme considers the reciprocal relationships between history, international studies, and other disciplines in the humanities. The programme would produce graduates who are conscious of historical changes that relate to human culture, and how these shape people’s lives as well as the multiple challenges of events locally and internationally.
