It is my pleasure to welcome you all to the Department of Demography and Social Statistics, Federal University, Birnin-Kebbi. I am most delighted to see you and to say a special welcome to those of you who are on this campus for the first time. My years of experience here have taught me that we have both made an excellent choice. I would like to say a few words about the Department. It is the first and only department of Demography and Social Statistics in the north of Nigeria. As one of the very distinct department in the University, the Department offers a wide range of courses from which you can choose to create for yourself a career that is right for you. As you meet your advisors, they will assist select courses to begin a journey that will stretch your mind and shape who you will become. I encourage you to go forth in a spirit of exploration. This is your chance to tap the rich variety of intellectuals in the Department that will shape your life. Try new things: choose provocative courses that will expose you with new ideas and alternative ways of thinking. As you have chosen to study Demography and Social Statistics what does that mean to you? As Demographers in the making, you are both the custodians and producers of the nation’s data on human population and the abundant opportunities. I therefore call on you all, to strive to work hard and acquire the necessary skills awaiting you in the wider world. The world is vast but could only make meaningful sense with valuable contributions of Demographers. The heart of the Department is a culture of inquiry. As a department, we are here to be your guides and allies on your journey of inquiry. Staff in the department are experts in their fields that they have acquired through research and real world experiences to address the most pressing challenges of the day. Try to know your lecturers, feel free to talk to them during office hours; engage them in discussions about their research interest and about your own ideas. They will guide you and open the doors to many possibilities. Finally, I want you to know that the entire University community and the Department in particular are here to support, sustain and encourage you as you commence study in this University. We are happy and privileged to welcome you into this vibrant learning community.
