ABOUT APPLIED GEOPHYSICS DEPARTMENT
The Federal University Birnin Kebbi was established in 2013 with Professor Lawal Suleiman Bilbis appointed as the pioneer Vice Chancellor. Though, a biochemist, the Vice Chancellor has great interest in the science of geophysics and so to a large extent, the establishment of the Department of Applied Geophysics is traced to this, driven possibly by the untapped abundant solids mineral potentials in this Nigerian sub-region.
Recall that Geophysics is essential to understanding the solid Earth, particularly on a global scale. Modern ideas of the structure and evolution of continents and oceans, or of the formation of mountain chains on land and below the oceans, for instance, are based extensively on discoveries made using geophysics. Geophysics contributes to geological knowledge on all scales, from the global, through the medium-scale such as regional mapping or the search for oil and minerals, down to the small-scale, such as civil engineering, archaeology, and groundwater pollution, as well as detailed geological mapping.
Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Geophysics (B.Sc. Applied Geophysics) of the Federal University Birnin Kebbi was ad initio placed as a Unit under the then Department of Earth Sciences along with Geology, but was quickly reverted (before penciling it at policy level) so that each Unit (Geology and Applied Geophysics) would stand as a Department. Professor O. K. Likkason was appointed pioneer Head (HOD) of this Department. Consequently at full commencement of academic admissions and activities in 2014, the Department of Applied Geophysics domiciled in the Faculty of Science took off with 26 registered pioneer students in the 2014/2015 session. Based on the design of the curricular of the degree programme provided by the National Universities Commission Benchmark Minimum Academic Standard (NUC BMAS), courses at 100 – level are basic sciences (mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science, and statistics), geology and general studies.
