NOA issues public advisory on flash flood risk

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) wishes to inform the general public that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a Flash Flood Risk Alert for the period 1–10 July 2026, following forecasts of heavy rainfall in several parts of the country.

Members of the public, especially those living in flood-prone and low-lying areas, are advised to remain vigilant and take the necessary precautions to protect lives and property.

The likely affected states are: Taraba, Sokoto, Borno, Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Plateau, Adamawa, Kwara, Kogi, Oyo, Ogun, Lagos, Osun, Ekiti, Delta, Edo, Abia, Imo, Anambra, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers and Bayelsa.

Safety advisory: 1. Avoid walking, driving or riding through flooded roads or fast-flowing water, as the depth and strength of the current may be deceptive.

2. Clear drainage channels around homes, schools, markets and business premises to allow the free flow of rainwater.

3. Residents of flood-prone communities should be prepared to relocate temporarily to safer areas if flooding becomes imminent.

4. Move important documents, household items and electrical appliances to higher ground where there is a risk of flooding.

5. Parents and guardians should ensure that children do not play in floodwaters, drainage channels or swollen rivers.

6. Disconnect electrical appliances and switch off power supply where flooding threatens to prevent electrocution.

7. Stay informed by following weather forecasts and official advisories from NiMet, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs) and other relevant government agencies.

8. Promptly report flooding incidents and blocked drainage channels to the appropriate emergency authorities.

All NOA state Directors and Community Orientation and Mobilisation Officers (COMOS) are directed to continually sensitize the public on the advisory note, especially the flood prone areas.

The National Orientation Agency urges all Nigerians to remain calm, vigilant and safety-conscious throughout this period. Taking preventive measures early can significantly reduce the risk of loss of lives and property.

Stay Alert. Stay Safe. Together, We Can Reduce the Impact of Flooding.
