The Federal University Birnin Kebbi (FUBK), on Wednesday, 22 April 2026, hosted its 4th Inaugural Lecture, delivered by Professor Kasimu Shehu of the Department of Biological Sciences.
Titled "Invisible Enemies, Visible Losses: A Lifetime of Confronting Fungal Threats to Nigerian Agriculture and Public Health," the lecture spotlighted the often-overlooked impact of fungal diseases on food security, public health, and economic stability in Nigeria.
In his presentation, Professor Shehu described fungal pathogens as "invisible enemies" responsible for substantial post-harvest losses and declining agricultural productivity nationwide. He further noted that fungal infections pose serious health risks, particularly to immunocompromised individuals.
Drawing on decades of research and field experience, the inaugural lecturer emphasised the urgent need for increased awareness, improved diagnostic systems, and the adoption of modern scientific approaches to managing fungal diseases. He also called for greater investment in mycology research, capacity building, and policy development to safeguard Nigeria's agricultural and public health sectors.
In his welcome address, the Vice-Chancellor of FUBK, Professor Muhammad Zaiyan Umar, congratulated the lecturer, describing him as a dedicated academic with a wealth of experience. He reiterated the University's commitment to promoting high-quality research, innovation, and intellectual discourse.
Professor Umar also appreciated the presence of distinguished guests, including the former Vice-Chancellor of Federal University Gusau, Professor Mu'azu Abubakar Gusau, noting that their attendance reflected unity and collaboration within the academic community.
The event was attended by members of the University management, academic staff, students, and invited guests from within and outside the institution. Participants commended the lecturer for his insightful presentation and commitment to addressing one of the nation's pressing challenges.
