CONVOCATION: FUBK HOLDS DEBATE, NOVELTY FOOTBALL MATCH
The maiden combined convocation ceremony of Federal University Birnin Kebbi, among other things, featured students activities lined up for the convocation ceremony. While the convocation debate was participated by students only, the Football Match was between staff and students of the University.
The Convocation Debate was conducted at ICAN Lecture Theatre on the 10th of October, 2024 by 10:00am. The two teams of debaters were drawn from different Departments of the University, where one team proposed while the other opposed.
The proposing team had Usama Abdullahi of Education Biology, Abdulbasit Ismail; Medicine and Surgery and Luka Yohanna from Nursing Science Department. The opposing side, on the other hand, had Fatima Hatruna Gbodoti, Medicine and Surgery; Ismaeel Aisha, Accounting and Usman Asmau Illo of Anatomy. The topic of the debate was “Male education should be given more priority in the society than female education.” Very sound arguments were tabled by both sides in their bid to win.
The debate session was chaired by Prof. Abdulaziz Shehu of the Department of Economics. The Vice Chancellor was represented at the event by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Aliyu Abdullahi Turaki. Also in attendance were the Dean Student Affairs, Prof. Ibrahim Magawata; Director Quality Assurance and SERVICOM, Ibrahim Mungadi; Director Procurement as well as Heads of various Departments.
The debate was won by the opposing team led by Fatima Haruna Gbodotiwho emerged as First Prize Winner, with cash prize of N80,000 while Usman Asmau Illo emerged as Second Prize Winner with cash prize of N60,000. The Third Prize Winner was Luka Yohanna who clinched a cash prize of N50,000. Also, Usama Abdullahi emerged as Best Speaker with a cash prize of N40,000, while the two other participants received cash prize of N20,000 each.
In a similar vein, another activity lined up for the day was the Novelty Footbal Match organized by the sports Unit of the Students Affairs Division in conjunction with the ceremonies committee. The novelty football match was played on Wednesday 10th October, 2024 at the University Sports Complex, Main Campus by 4:30pm.
The match was played between students’ football team and that of the staff. Although the game ended 2:1 in favour of the students, it was an interesting play where both teams put in their best of skills to win the trophy. The match was kicked off by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. MZ Umar to the admiration of all spectators. In attendance was the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Hon. Hayatu Bawa, Principal Officers of the University, Dean of Student Affairs and Chairman Ceremonies Committee, Deans of Faculty, Directors and Heads of various Departments and Units. Also in attendance was the District Head of Unguwar Jeji, friends and well-wishers from the host community.
