Overview

DEPARTMENT OF ACCOUNTING FACULTY OF SOCIAL AND MANAGENET SCIENCES FEDRAL UNIVERSITY BIRNIN KEBBI Historical Overview of Accounting Department Department of accounting is one of the pioneer departments in the Faculty of Arts Social and Management Sciences, of the Federal University Birnin-Kebbi, which was established on 18th February, 2013. It commences undergraduate academic activities in November, 2014 for the 2014/2015 academic session, after the approval was granted by the National Universities Commission. The department started with nineteen (19) students who were offered admission to study BSc. Accounting programme through the UTME. Dr. Musa Yelwa Abubakar was the pioneer Head of the Department (HOD) and four (4) teaching staff whom also became pioneer staff as follows: Prof. A.M. Bashir, (the former Dean of FASMS) Dr. Ali Shariff Kabara, CNA, Mal. Abubakar Modibbo, ACA and Mal. Ibrahim Alkali, FCA. Dr. Ali Shariff Kabara, PhD, CNA, MNIM, MNAA, is presently the head of the department, which has 22 academic staff, that comprises 4 Professor, 3 Assoc. Professors, 3 Senior Lecturers, 2 Lecturer I, 3 Lecturer II and 7 Graduate Assistants. Meanwhile, nine of the academic staff have PhD (Details of staff and their area of specialization was attached). The Department emerged as the best in the first academic year of the university in students� performance as disclosed in the maiden Senate meeting on Examination Results� Considerations. Moreover, two (2) of the three (3) university awards had been won by accounting students as a result of their brilliant performance which of course, signifies the bright future and prospects of the Department. The department already incorporated the New Core curriculum which has included contemporary development in progressive technologies affecting Accounting generally. This was meant to adopt with the major shift from the Traditional �Desk� to �Field� and �Cloud� Accounting. Therefore, the department has established a well-equipped E-Library with modern facilities including contemporary ACCOUNTING SOFTWARES LIKE SAGE 50, QUICKBOOKS etc. Philosophy The general philosophy of undergraduate training in the accounting programme is to provide the students with quality education and training that will develop the mind, impart both theoretical and practical knowledge on the individual student, develop self-confidence, and help graduates to be innovative and self-reliant in the field of accounting. UTME Entry
Candidate must posses Five credit passes including English Language, Mathematics and Accounting or Economics at Olevel and any other two relevant social science subjects. Candidates must score the minimum points in the UTME; the three sitting subjects must be relevant to Accounting as specified by JAMB.
Direct Entry
Holders of National Diploma in Accounting, Finance, Banking, Business Administration and other relevant courses from recognised institutions may be considered for direct admission in to 200 level. Candidates must in addition to above satisfy the University Matriculation requirements. Graduation Requirements To graduate, a student admitted into 100-Level must earn a minimum of 159 units. For a student admitted into 200-Level (Direct Entry), he/she must earn a minimum of 122 units.
