The Department of Applied Geophysics, FUBK was established in 2013, and full commencement of academic admissions and activities started in 2014 with 26 registered pioneer students in the 2014/2015 session. The 4-year degree program was designed in line with the NUC BMAS and intended to provide a mission-oriented geosciences knowledge and expertise to all the students that go through the program and equip them with the necessary skills and adequate knowledge of the composition of the Earth’s subsurface and be able to fully exploit the Earth’s natural resources for national development. Here, the necessary ingredients for career opportunities in the minerals/oil/gas industry, engineering/ground water related, academics and policy makers within the national economy and in relevant government establishment are brought together and impacted in the students. The Department has designed a program of study which combines curriculum, scholarship and industry-based system. Students are provided with IT-driven quality classrooms, research and service opportunities with the state-of-the-art equipment for field surveys. Staff of the Department provide (a) mentorship and quality academic advice, (b) encouragement to develop global perspective through national and international partnership with professional bodies, (c) role models for safe and ethical professional behavior, (d) continuous update of curricula that expose students to instrumentation and technologies of data collection, managing, processing and display and (e) service-learning through student industrial work scheme (SIWES), field schooling and community engagement programs and projects.
