CONVOCATION: VC SEEKS SUPPORT FOR FENCING THE UNIVERSITY, TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM
The Vice Chancellor Federal University Birnin Kebbi, Prof. Muhammad Ziayan Umar has said that the unfenced land at the main campus of the University tops challenges being faced by the institution. He made the disclosure during the maiden combined 1st to 5th convocation ceremony October 12, 2024.
The VC said FUBK main campus sits on a very expansive land, covering a total land area of 861, 428 hectares, largely unfenced. The fenced part is made of 2mm thick x 50mm galvanized chain – link fence wire mesh fixed with 3.88mm gauge straining wires, fence.
“The nature of the fence has subjected the university to encroachment by people and animals, and in many places to the stealing of the wires by unscrupulous elements. The lingering dispute with the host community over part of the land has also been worrisome. Any effort to assist in safeguarding the university from potential threat to its assist shall be warmly welcomed,” he saidThe Vice Chancellor also pleased with the government, philanthropists and other well to do individuals to assist the University with buses to aid the transportation of its teeming students.
“Our three (3) campuses are located more than ten kilometers away from Birnin Kebbi, the Kebbi state capital. With the inadequacy of transport buses for staff and students, accessing the campuses have portended great challenges to the university community. The university will joyfully welcome supports that could ameliorate the transport challenges we currently face.”
The recent excessive hike in electricity tariff has made it impossible for the university to meet its obligations to KEDCO, leading to the cutting off of the university’s power supply.
