Department of Demography and Social Statistics

Welcome Note

You are welcome to the official page of the Department of Demography and Social Statistics, Federal University Birnin Kebbi. The Department is the first and only demographic and social statistics training department in the whole of the northern region of Nigeria presently. The academic philosophy of the Department is to provide a sound, internationally competitive demographic training in the region and beyond in a learning environment that is conducive to active and engaged learning, and to produce well groomed undergraduates and graduates in the field of Demography and Social Statistics equipped with skills and knowledge needed for sustainable national development. Our style of teaching is practical, experiential and occasionally humorous, which we believe leads to a collaborative learning process that benefits everyone involved to generating evidence-based findings to inform policies and programme-design in the northern Nigeria in particular and Nigeria as whole.

The Department, in its effort to provide internationally competitive demographic training has an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department of Demography and Population Studies, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa for the development of its curriculum and staff training, and the Department of Demography and Social Statistics, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria for graduate staff training. Also, another MoU with the Nahuche Health and Demographic Surveillance System for the purpose of exposing our students to practical demographic training. The department also serves as the research hub for the Bill Gates funded Girls for Health (G4H) project in the 4 northern States of Kebbi, Sokoto, Kaduna and Jigawa.

The Department of Demography and Social Statistics, Federal University Birnin Kebbi, is the first full-fledged department for demographic training in the whole of Northern Nigeria. The Department was established during the 2014/2015 Academic Session with the mandate to provide sound, internationally competitive demographic training in the region and beyond. Through the singular effort of the foundation Vice Chancellor, Prof. Lawal S. Bilbiss, the University entered into a collaborative agreement with the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, to assist the new Department to redesign its curriculum in demographic training, to which the Wits Demography and Population Studies Programme, in the spirit of the MOU, reviewed the existing curriculum and redesigned it to meet international standard. The curriculum in use in this Department is very unique and different in terms of philosophy and scope from any undergraduate curriculum in demographic training in sub-Saharan Africa.

The Department started with 22 students during the 2014/2015 academic session and presently has 50 students spread across the 100-300 levels undertaking undergraduate training for the award of B.Sc. (Hons) degree in Demography and Social Statistics.
