Welcome Note

I am delighted to congratulate and welcome you to the Department of Business Administration, Federal University, Birnin Kebbi. The Department of Business Administration (DBA)which is located at the first floor- centre wing of the Faculty of Arts, Social and Management Sciences’ building located at the Permanent Site of the University is unique in the Faculty of Arts, Social & Management Sciences as the only discipline to study the prime pillar of individual and society and their relations to the science of business and its management throughout the North-West Geo-Political Zone in particular and Nigeria in General using an on-campus instruction model. The DBA is as young as FUBK itself and this therefore founded on very solid pillars and structures firmly derived from the experiences, knowledge, skills and expertise of its academic and non-academic staff and principally from the philosophy and objectives of the programme.

It is important, therefore, for you to appreciate that the programmes of the Department are designed to inculcate quality business management and related higher education skills to enable graduates be creative, initiative and independent business oriented for the development of self and society. The Bachelor of Science Administration programme is robust in content and technologically driven in scope.

The programme is designed to specifically enable graduates:

  • communicate business and related information professionally; 
  • recognize and solve business and related problems in an ethical manner; 
  • work well in diverse teams, including virtual settings and leadership of top level local and international business concerns; 
  • analyse and utilize financial information for prompt and responsive decisions.

To achieve these noble objectives, the DBA values and appreciates teamwork in which the students are the centre of its activities. Relevant resources for modern system of teaching and learning are provided and periodically updated to be applicable to changing modern business in which technology and ICT are its prime pillars. Our University and Departmental Libraries shall be well equipped with current facilities and books to facilitate students’ learning and encourage robust student-teacher relationship. Our staff are capable and amiable and always ready to assist you in your drive to learn.

And finally, our social environment is liberal and thus appreciates cultural exchanges and integration. Students are allowed to socially develop their mental and psychological potentials, which together build their capacity and personality for the development of self and the society.

On this note, we wish to encourage every student to read the students Handbook in order to be abreast with rules and regulations and other fundamentals as guides for their stay in this Department and the Federal University, Birnin Kebbi. On behalf of all academic and non-academic staff of the Department of Business Administration, I wish every one of you a successfully fruitful studentship.

HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

The history of this potentially great Department can be traced to the history of the University itself. The Department commenced academic activities in the 2014/2015 academic year with twenty two (22) students enrolled to its B.Sc. Business Administration programme. Four academic staff and an admin assistant took up the task of academic and administrative affairs of the Department under the able leadership of Dr. M.S. Umar (then) as the acting Head of Department.

The second year of the Department witnessed an increased in the manpower of the Department. The trend which culminated into having more academic and administrative staff which currently stands at twelve (12). Among them are two Professors, two senior lecturers, one lecturer I and II each and three number of assistant lecturers. Currently, three lecturers are in the advanced level of securing PhDs.

In order to attain the lofty goals of the Department, four committees were set up to drive the Department into the universe of excellent scholarship through intensive research effort and the visibility of research output to global audience and users. This committees include:

  • Seminar Committee;
  • Journal Committee;
  • Research Committee; and
  • DTLC Committee
    • The results of these committees’ commitments are visible in the University community. So far, seven (7) seminar series were held by the Department. This achievement is not only unique in itself, but it also serves as a model which other Departments are graciously emulating.

      It is worth mentioning that the Department’s Journal is passing through registration process. The journal shall be available both online and in-print. The strong editorial team built from local and foreign faculties would ensure that the journal is never compromised in terms of quality.

      In the near future, the Department envisages establishing additional courses like:

      • B.Sc. Entrepreneurship
      • Postgraduate Diploma in Management
      • Masters of Business Administration with specializations in Finance, Marketing, Human Resources and Entrepreneurship
      • M.Sc. Management
      • PhD Business Management

      It is our humble hope that the programmes to be established will not only provide the University’s immediate community with solution to their management related challenges, but also create ethically minded scholars and managers that would stare our business destiny to the shore of growth and prosperity.
